Best tapas market ever - Mercado de San Miguel

Entrance to the San Miguel food market

"I'll take that one..."

Thursday,  November 07, 2019            Madrid

Now that the AIA tour is complete, we’re among the last here. Mike saw our tour leader Elena sending off groups to home and/or to the Barcelona tour extension.

After enjoying the hotel’s breakfast buffet, we set off at 9:30 via taxi to San Miguel Market. Opened in May 1916 as a food market, the Mercado de San Miguel is the most popular market among tourists in Madrid. It is located in the center of the Los Austrias area and hosts over 10 million visitors a year. More than 100 years old, it was purchased by private investors, refurbished, and opened as an upscale gastronomy market in May 2009.

Beautiful ironwork building framing has been restored from the original market, which opened in 1916

The market is now filled with amazing gourmet tapas stalls - either eat on the spot, or pack up to take home

Fresh fish - salmon, octopus, shrimp

Small, open-faced sandwiches - perfect bites for lunch

Amazing creations with olives

I'll take one of everything, please...

According to one Spanish website, “the San Miguel Market is the city’s gastronomic temple, the contemporary essence of all the corners of Spanish cuisine. From the best Iberian ham to fresh seafood brought from Galicia each day, the Mediterranean rice or the special cheese from Castile, Asturias or the Basque Country. The finest products and wine from the length and breadth of Spain are divided among 30 permanent stands and 3 in a portable format.” I had fun taking a million photos. I tried a freshly shucked oyster for my second breakfast.

Fresh fish stall - I had a fresh-shucked oyster here for "second breakfast"

Octopus on a stick - yum!

Empanadas - each row is a different flavorful stuffing

If you can dream it up, they will make it for you

Gorgeous salmon and shrimp with greens on a baguette

Can't forget the desserts!
