Madrid's Meninas - colorful art pieces waiting for discovery

One of 80 fiberglass, decorated sculptures, called the Las Meninas art exhibition

Las Meninas is an intriguing art installation of 80 sculptures placed in strategic locations around Madrid.  As I walked along, I photographed most of those we saw, and have catalogued them here.

A web site on Las Meninas describes the art installation as follows: "The main characters of Las Meninas, Diego Velazquez's masterpiece that hangs in the Prado Museum, have wandered off the canvas and into central Madrid.  This city-wide urban art installation is taking art from the museum and onto the streets this year.

Las Meninas ("the ladies in waiting") is a 1656 painting by Diego Velazquez who worked in the court of Philip IV.  The painting is one of the star attractions of the Prado Museum, which depicts the young princess Margarita Teresa surrounded by her ladies in waiting and other members of the court.

Velazquez's painting of Las Meninas is the Prado Museum; his self portrait is on the left

"It is the brainchild of Spanish sculptor Antonio Azzato, who designed the sculpture and recruited a group of artists, fashion designers and singers to help decorate the Meninas. The sculptures are made from fiberglass and are six feet tall and weigh 66 pounds."  The sculptures are scheduled to tour a number of other cities after their display ends in 2020.

Wonder what the pigeon thinks?
