Madrid's Hotel Wellington - our new home away from home

Doorway entrance to the Wellington Hotel in Madrid

Tuesday,  November 4, 2019   Madrid

The AIA tour ends in Madrid and we arrived on Monday night at our final location, the Wellington Hotel. It's an interesting place to stay. It’s large – half a city block – centrally located in the posh Salamanca district. Our room is large, with a high end bathroom – separate tub and large shower. But the fabrics, colors and amenities seems a bit underwhelming for a 5 star hotel. We weren’t able to visit the famed roof-top organic garden – supposed to be the largest atop a commercial building in Europe. It’s located on an interesting street with many high end stores and restaurants. The hotel even has a Michelin star Japanese restaurant, which we didn’t sample. It’s an easy walk to the Retiro Park, and about 20 minutes to the Prado and other museums.

Michael and I were too tired to make much of an effort for dinner on Monday after our tour of the Alhambra, so we ate in the Bar Inglese. I had an Aperol Spritz and Michael had a glass of cava, Mike had a club sandwich and I had a starter of thinly sliced beef with parmesan cheese. And I had hot chocolate and baby macaroons for dessert! Yum.

The Bar Inglese is a great place for a bite to eat at the Hotel

Mini-macaroons - a whole plateful - for dessert!

Ready for a great night's rest after a long day of touring

The hotel breakfasts are nice, but not really different than what we found at the various paradors. While it’s not a place I would have chosen, we’re here for the last 4 nights of our trip, and the Wellington Hotel is an easy place to enjoy.
