Meet Abigail - resident falcon at Jumeriah Zabeel Saray Hotel

Abigail came for a breakfast visit at the hotel

Monday, February 19

Our National Geographic Tour of Asia officially begins today!  We will check in with them during the day and have our welcoming reception, programming and dinner tonight.

This morning we met a lovely falcon named Abigail, owned by the hotel and brought over to our table by her trainer.  He said she was bred in England and is 13 years old.  She hunts the pigeons from the roof of the hotel.  Ute told us yesterday that the falcons must be registered, micro-chipped, have their own passport for travel and are very expensive to keep.  They can only hunt in the winter –  and they die from the heat if the temperature gets over 40 degrees.  Hunting with falcons is not allowed in the wild in the UAE, but the owners often travel for hunts and competitions in Saudi or Iran or other areas.

Our breakfast was leisurely, with a nice table on the terrace at the water's edge.  We again opted for a latte (me) and double espresso (Michael) and this time ordered the Eggs Benedict.  The dish was very tasty - with smaller toast rounds that the typical US "English muffin" halves - and perfectly poached round ends with the yolks so yellow that they were almost orange.

Breakfast on the terrace - wonderful morning latte
