The dome of the Basilica de Estrela |
We walked to the Basilica de Estrela, following the tram track and took a look inside. Large, and very Baroque, it is considered a minor basilica in our guidebook. It was build in the mid 1700's by Queen Maria I in thanks for producing children for the future crown. She dedicated the basilica to the Sacred Heart of Jesus - the first in the world to be so dedicated.

We then crossed the street to visit the gardens – but it was getting dark and we couldn’t see very much. It was dark by the time we returned, about 7:30 and we were ready for dinner.

Jardim de Estrela - many acres of parkland to be explored on another day... |
