Stunning tiles on this large, beautiful and well guarded private resident in the Lapa area |
We passed many houses with tile facades. I remember from our trip a few years ago, Lisbon is famous for its azulejos, patterned tiles from the mid 1800s. Many houses a covered with them – either completely for it’s façade, or with patches of tiles with artwork woven into niches or other features of the buildings. We happened to pass one private residence that was spectacular – listed in the top five of Lisbon’s famous tile houses at 24 Rua do Sacramento. The guide book says it was built in the late 1800s as a noble residence. It’s half baroque, half art nouveau and symbolic of the late Romantic period. It’s located within a few houses of the US Embassy – among many other embassies in the Lapa area.

The US Embassy to Portugal is right next to the beautiful tiled private residence. |

This religious compound was also most beautiful - couldn't find a name to identify it |
|
We thought it might be either a convent or a school |

The blue azulejos and yellow facade are a great combination |
