Grinding cacao nibs with mortar and pestle |

Our group had one more stop to make on Friday afternoon, following our boat trip and gin tasting excursion. Right next to the Jenever Museum is De Bonte Koe - a famous chocolatier in Schiedam. We hurried over from our gin tasting in order to make it to the shop by 5 PM, knowing that they closed at 5:30.
But surprise! When we arrived, they were already closed for a private event. We were so disappointed, as we'd heard about their delicious chocolates and hoped to purchase for gifts back home.
While we were all hanging out by the locked shop door, talking and lamenting, a lovely young woman stuck her head out the window from the second story above us. She heard our plight, and asked us to wait a minute, she was coming down with a surprise.
She is an American - from Iowa! - living in Holland with her Dutch husband, only a week or two away from giving birth to her second son. She heard us talking, recognized our midwestern (and Canadian) accents, and wanted to bring us a sample of the De Bonte Koe chocolate that she had in her apartment. What a sweetie!

After our very busy and fun day, we headed back to the Aurora for our last dinner together. Everyone would be departing in the morning. In addition, Karina had good news about her husband Steve - his health was improving and he would be discharged from the hospital the next day.
