On Safari in the Serengeti

Travel to Serengeti

[Sunday, February 8, 2015]

We arrived in Tanzania at the Kilimanjaro Airport – can’t believe we’re in Africa.  We saw Mt. Kilimanjaro on the way in, as well as other evidence of volcanic activity and the Great Rift Valley.

To get to the safari lodge, we flew an additional hour via a bush plane to the Seronera airstrip – a small airfield in the middle of the Serengeti.  Each airplane seated 10 and we had 7 planes.  We passed over dry, arid land, a number of Masaai villages, gorges and craters, including the Ngorogoro crater.

We arrived at the airstrip on the Serengeti at around 4:30 PM and then took safari land rovers to the Four Seasons Lodge.  We did a game drive with about 6 people per vehicle.  We were able to see  an amazing amount of wildlife – gazelle, topi,  eagle, zebra, ostrich, elephants, giraffe, hippos, impala, baboon, jackal, mongoose, and others that I’m surely forgetting.

Perhaps the most inspiring was seeing a leopard up in an acacia tree.  Long tail dangling down from it’s perch on the tree – it looked like it didn’t have a care in the world.  The driver said we were very lucky to see a leopard – most people did not see one on safari.

Made it to Africa!
