We crossed the International Date Line and then landed on a somewhat wet and cloudy Samoa.
Crossing the dateline meant we we able to wish Charlie a happy birthday a day early! |
Coral reef surrounding Samoa |
Ebola screening present at all the airports; this one especially prominent
Arrival in Samoa was easy – a small airport in eastern part of 2 islands of independent Samoa, near the capital of Apia. We received pink plumeria leis at the airport.

Sumptuous breakfast buffets with tasty fruits like papaya, mango, and pineapple - yum! |
When we arrived at the hotel, a“fire dancer” met us at
the entrance and ran in front of our bus with a flaming torch to escort us down the driveway. As we entered the hotel lobby, there
was a fierce dance and war chant by the Samoan men – they explained to us that the dance demonstrates their fierceness and power and that they will use that power to protect us
while we stay here. I slept very well!
