Monday, May 08 – Breakfast of champions to tackle Volterra and the Etruscans
|
Caffe latte, decorated with the Sun, to fortify our day in Volterra with the Etruscans |
As
usual, hard to wake up the first morning of after arrival – trying hard not to
be jet lagged. Woke up to the
alarm at 7:15, but didn’t make it out of bed until an hour later. I had a lovely morning bath, using the
lavender scented bath salts and their locally made shampoo and bath gel. It’s nice that they offer breakfast
from 8 until 10. Michael left for
breakfast earlier than me to have his morning coffee. When I arrived at the dining hall, I had to tell them for
the second time in less than 12 hours: “Ho perso mio marito di nuovo.” (I have
lost my husband again..) Michael
was setting outside under the pergola, looking west across the hills to the town
of Volterra on the horizon (about 10 KM away).

The breakfast offerings are all locally made – farm raised organic eggs, meats and cheese, including freshly made ricotta; local honey and marmalades; sweet cakes and a crostata; freshly made peach, pear, and apple juices and a hearty, nutty mueseli. I ordered a caffe latte “con schiuma” (with foam) and it arrived with a lovely sun (or maybe a girasole – sunflower) design on top. After three rounds of assorted food samplings and 2 caffe lattes, we were ready to head out for the day.
