Thursday, May 11 – Driving through
the Val d’ Orcia finding gems of peace & beauty
 |
Olive groves and rows of grape vines, hills topped with golden stone and tiled buildings - everywhere you look |
We
hopped in our Fiat SUV and headed out towards Montepulciano. It was a beautiful day to travel in the
Tuscany countryside – sunny, green hills, blue sky and golden stone
buildings. The Val d’ Orcia is the
heart of the wine country, and so many fields of grapes – the leaves on the
tops of the vines are just opening and they provide rows of soft spring green
anchored by dark grey brown wizened stems. It seems there is a small hill town crowning each mound in
the distance – Montecchiello, Radicofani, Pienza, Rocca d’Orcia, Vignoni, San
Quirico, Montalcino. To our left,
Monte Amiata was a constant landmark on the horizon – at 1700M, it’s the
tallest “hill” in the region. It's a beautiful day for a drive.

Pienza - a town rebuilt during the Renaissance by Pope Pius II for himself and named after himself |

How old is this olive tree? |
 |
Maybe we're the same age? |
