Pink Ice Floes and Vega Island, Antarctic Peninsula

Sunset over one of the many islands of the eastern Antarctic Peninsula

Tuesday, November 14 -  Evening at Vega Island

We had enjoyed an exhilerating day on an ice walk near Snow Hill.  We were located on the eastern Antarctic peninsula, having crossed over via the Weddel Sea,  Now, we are moving north and eventually east to finish our expedition on the western side of the Antarctic peninsula.  This afternoon, we had a lecture on the history of Antarctic exploration by John Pachuca. It was especially interesting, as a number of the explorers in the "Golden Age" - a century ago - had been trapped by ice and needed to overwinter in the very areas we are now exploring.  Some, like the Endurance and the Belgica, were trapped in the middle of the icepack with their ships being crushed by the forces of the ice.  Some groups made it to a number of these small rock islands, where they finished the winter, waiting for rescue by whaling ships.

Granite cliffs near Vega Island

During dinner, we saw amazing cliffs of granite - Vega Island.  A small island in front of Vega is called Devil’s Island. And tonight we saw a pod of killer whales - at least 20.  The naturalists said they are probably feeding on penguins.

Love the pink sunset reflections amid the briight white snow and ice
