View of the Endurance from the West Point Island B & B |
Friday, November 3 - West Point Island
We ended our hike on West Point Island with a visit to the solitary house at the top of Settlement Bay. The caretaker couple is from Germany, and they run the island’s Air BnB. The island’s owner died last year at age 82. The couple had been helping on the island previously, in between sailing around the world a few times. (Their sailboat is anchored in the harbor.) They have contracted to run the Air BnB for six months, and then spend the other six months at South Georgia. They hosted our group at their house - a pretty white and green cottage with an outdoor garden enclosed by hedges (and baby Upland geese). They offered us tea and coffee and about 25 different homemade pasties. It was a tasty and relaxed ending to a beautiful afternoon.

Ominously, turkey vultures are waiting along the roof tops. Watch out little chicks! |
