Il Museo del Vetro - Murano's Glass Museum

Il Museo del Vetro (Glass Museum) is located in a beautiful old palazzo.

Inside the museum - the chandeliers complement the ceiling of the palazzo perfectly.

Murano has an outstanding glass museum, Il Museo del Vetro in the Palazzo Giustinian.  The examples of the best styles of Venetian glass on display are complemented by videos showing the techniques and explaining the details of how these objects were created.

Interestingly, there is no gift shop at the museum, in contrast to what is typical in American museums.  They must leave the buying and selling to the dozens and dozens of local glass shops.

These most delicate goblets - I'd be afraid to injure myself drinking from them!

This is an example of how glass is used to mimic natural objects - in this case onyx and jasper stone

The museum had a special exhibition of "playthings" made of glass - called "It's OK to touch the glass" - they even had a racetrack made of glass with remote controlled cars that you could race around the track, setting off a number of active displays from a motion sensor.  Creative!

A T Rex made from glass - dinosaurs are a favorite of our grandkids these days.

Who could resist this giant rocket ship?

Not me!!

This ancient warehouse, across from the museum, with beautifully decorated arches - the mosaics in sad disrepair

A bit of water on the canal quay outside of the museum.  Tides and winds are high today.
